Chhattisgarh arrests Kalicharan in MP, war of words follows | India News

RAIPUR/BHOPAL: Chhattisgarh police arrested Kalicharan Maharaj — wanted for making derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi and a minority community — from Khajuraho in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh early on Thursday even as police added sedition to the charges against him. A Raipur court remanded him in police custody for two days.
The arrest sparked a war of words between the MP and Chhattisgarh governments, with the MP home minister objecting to the way Kalicharan was arrested and Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel wondering if Mishra was upset by the arrest of someone who had spoken against Gandhi. No protocol was violated, Baghel said. “Narottam Mishra must clarify if he is upset or happy that someone who spoke against Gandhiji has been arrested,” Baghel said.
In Bhopal, asked about Baghel’s question, Mishra told reporters, “What Kalicharan said was objectionable, so was the way he was arrested.”
Earlier, the MP home minister said local police were not taken into confidence for the arrest, and argued that it was a “contravention of the spirit federal structure”. Mishra said he has asked the state DGP to take up the matter with his Chhattisgarh counterpart. “I have asked the DGP to also seek an explanation from Chhattisgarh DGP,” Mishra told reporters at his house on Thursday morning.
Kalicharan faces FIRs in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra for using derogatory words against Mahatma Gandhi and hailing Nathuram Godse at a ‘dharam sansad’ in Raipur last week. After making the remarks on December 26, he switched off his cellphone and left Chhattisgarh for an undisclosed destination, said Chhattisgarh police. Raipur cops filed an FIR, but Kalicharan issued a video statement to say he didn’t regret using ‘apshabd’ (derogatory words) against Gandhi.
